Hills Garlic Festival, September in New Denver
Now held in Centennial Park, New Denver, the Hills Garlic Festival is always scheduled for first Sunday after Labour Day. The Hills Recreation Society manages the wildly popular Hills Garlic Festival—listed as one of the world’s top ten garlic fests by virtualtourist.com in 2010 and noted by Canadian Geographic Travel. Some 6,000 people come to enjoy the delicious food and inventive crafts from more than 150 vendors, serenaded by musicians and by waves of laughter from hordes of children enjoying the beach, face painting and games. A highlight of the year, the festival has raised money for recreation facilities and services for the area. “Where culture meets agriculture.”
Merchants’ Night, December in New Denver
Early December the Slocan District Chamber of Commerce coordinates Merchants’ Nights with New Denver’s downtown businesses. Businesses stay open late for a fun night on the town. Santa arrives via Fire Truck for photos with children, carolers warm the streets, and stores and restaurants stay open late for holiday shopping, dining and socializing. Sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corporation, the Chamber offers baked goods, hot chocolate and hot dogs free to everyone attending.

Professional and home-grown productions are shown, most with a local and regional focus and by producers of all ages.
