The Slocan District Chamber of Commerce (SDCC) has maintained a Health Committee for several years. This committee reports to the Chamber Board on community health-related items, often pertaining to the Slocan Community Health Centre (SCHC).
In 2015 the Health Committee was ‘re-energized,’ inviting Slocan Valley Village Councils, RDCK Area H, and health and emergency service organizations in the Valley to each appoint a representative to the committee. A limited number of interested residents with knowledge of and interest in health services in the Valley were also invited to join the Committee. All Health Care Committees members are also Chamber members.
The state of health care services is of great interest to all of us.
The purpose of the expanded Chamber Health Committee is to work with the Interior Health Authority and Slocan Valley health and emergency services in order to be well informed of any new developments that could affect local services, with a view to maintaining and improving existing service levels.
In 2017 a Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee was developed in collaboration with the Health Committee, given the need for immediate physician recruitment at SCHC. (250-358-2561). It is this Committee’s primary goal to ensure SCHC is staffed sufficiently to continue running a 24/7 emergency room.
